Get the extension from a MimeType

问题


I want to get the extension from a MimeType.

For example:

video/mp4                       ---->  mp4
application/x-rar-compressed    ---->  rar
text/plain                      ---->  txt
application/pdf                 ---->  pdf

To save my file on Windows or Linux, I have this method that let me to download a file from an URL. So, I'm able only to save it without extension (I don't want that).

This method lets me only to get the MimeType not the extension.

There are two ways generally:

  • have a mapping of MimeTypes to extensions;
  • compute it, using some logic;

The second approach is really not good, so I offer it only for completion. For the first approach you can use this resource: https://www.freeformatter.com/mime-types-list.html

I would use HashMap<K,V> - the key being the MimeType and the value be the extension (or similar).

The problem with this question is that several extensions can produce the same MimeType, vice versa is simple and you can find it in many utils classes for example: MimetypesFileTypeMap, but I found this useful class MimeTypes and I did a little trick adding an extensions Mapping like @Mindaugas Bernatavičius said, remember this return the default extension by MimeType but can be inaccurate.

Try jodd. There is a utility for that: MimeUtil.getMimeType() that takes an extension and returns the mime type. See: https://github.com/oblac/jodd/blob/master/jodd-core/src/main/java/jodd/net/MimeTypes.java#L119

For all running a Spring project:

import org.springframework.util.MimeTypeUtils;
...
String fileExtension = MimeTypeUtils.parseMimeType(attachment.getMimeType()).getSubtype();

As MimeTypeUtils is in the spring-core module probably it's not worth to have a dependency on this one if you don't have a spring project.

Update Does not work for all cases and not for original question. Only in case subType equals file extension like for png, jpeg, pdf and so on. Thanks to the comment.
