Matplotlib subplot sharex not behaving as expected with GeoPandas

Question

I have a subplot with four plots. They all share the same X-axis. Plots 1 & 2 also share a Y-axis; and plots 3 & 4 share a Y-axis.

Plot-1 is made with a GeoPandas
