how do I get a substring in iOS?

You can use an NSScanner, or search using an NSRegularExpression.

NSScanner* sc = [NSScanner scannerWithString:s];

[sc scanUpToCharactersFromSet:[NSCharacterSet decimalDigitCharacterSet]

[sc scanInt:&num];
