Are there any downsides to use php with nginx instead of apache. What is the best/recommeded way to couple php with Nginx on a linux machine?

Best/Recommended way means: what way should i use? Should I use php-fpm or fastcgi. Should I use sockets or internal-IP for the communication between php and nginx. etc.
