Throwable cause = originalException;
while(cause.getCause() != null && cause.getCause() != cause) {
    cause = cause.getCause();
}

or am I missing something?

The Apache ExceptionUtils provide the following method:

Throwable getRootCause(Throwable throwable) 

as well as

String getRootCauseMessage(Throwable th)
