Dive Into Python is a good choice, but I also recommend Python Visual Quickstart Guide
For someone that knows how to program and wants to get the 80% of the basics of the language, it's a good deal. And it retails at $20. It's certainly not the last thing I'd read on python, but it's a good first one.
