Merge git repository in subdirectory

I\'d like to merge a remote git repository in my working git repository as a subdirectory of it. I\'d like the resulting repository to contain the merged history of the two

Have you tried adding the extra repository as a git submodule? It won't merge the history with the containing repository, in fact, it will be an independent repository.

I mention it, because you haven't.
