There is a basic set of metadata that you can get from a file.

BasicFileAttributes attr = Files.readAttributes(file, BasicFileAttributes.class);

Also there are numerous identification and characterization tools that can do similar tasks. Apache Tika, Pronom Droid, Jhove, etc.
