Matplotlib: axvspan not plotting anything with Pandas datetime

Question

I have a Python 3 script (Python 3.9.1) that used to work until yesterday. Yesterday Pandas was updated to 1.2.1 and Matplotlib to 3.3.4 and now the script is no longer working
