Is there a better, more “Standard” way to perform SQL queries in PHP without using a framework?

For the longest time, I\'ve been using the following basic formatting for SQL queries within my PHP:

$sql = \"SELECT * FROM `user-data` WHERE `id` = \'\".$id.\"\
