Change MySQL default character set to UTF-8 in my.cnf?

Currently we are using the following commands in PHP to set the character set to UTF-8 in our application.

Note: my.cnf file is located at /etc/mysql/

After adding these lines:

[mysqld]
collation-server = utf8_unicode_ci
init-connect='SET NAMES utf8'
character-set-server = utf8
skip-character-set-client-handshake

[client]
default-character-set   = utf8

[mysql]
default-character-set   = utf8

Don't forget to restart server:

sudo service mysql restart
