My favourite method is using a clearfix class for parent element

.clearfix:after {
    content: ".";
    display: block;
    height: 0;
    clear: both;
    visibility: hidden;
}

.clearfix {
    display: inline-block;
}

* html .clearfix {
    height: 1%;
