Actually, you can do this more simple with type: "post":

$( "#birds" ).autocomplete({
    source: "search.php",
    type: "post"
    minLength: 2,
    select: function( event, ui ) {
        log( ui.item ?
            "Selected: " + ui.item.value + " aka " + ui.item.id :
            "Nothing selected, input was " + this.value );
    }
});
