How to read a local text file?

I’m trying to write a simple text file reader by creating a function that takes in the file’s path and converts each line of text into a char array, but it’s not working.

You need to check for status 0 (as when loading files locally with XMLHttpRequest, you don't get a status returned because it's not from a Webserver)

function readTextFile(file)
{
    var rawFile = new XMLHttpRequest();
    rawFile.open("GET", file, false);
    rawFile.onreadystatechange = function ()
    {
        if(rawFile.readyState === 4)
        {
            if(rawFile.status === 200 || rawFile.status == 0)
            {
                var allText = rawFile.responseText;
                alert(allText);
            }
        }
    }
    rawFile.send(null);
}

And specify file:// in your filename:

readTextFile("file:///C:/your/path/to/file.txt");
