I added debug under buildTypes in the gradle file and missed a comma after "API_URL":

not working:

buildTypes {
    ...
    debug {
        buildConfigField "String", "API_URL" "\"http://myapi.com/\""
    }
}

working:

buildTypes {
    ...
    debug {
        buildConfigField "String", "API_URL", "\"http://myapi.com/\""
    }
}
