Remove unnecessary slashes from a given path with bash

How can I get rid of unnecessary slashes in a given path?

Example:

p=\"/foo//////bar///hello/////world\"

I want:

p=\"/f

    In zsh:

    echo "${p:a}"
    

    Works with non-existent paths, too.
